We’ve been meeting lots of pet parents who have adopted kitties from one of our favourite rescues the “Forgotten Ones Cat Rescue” and along the way we met the lovely Kari!
My name is Kari and I’m 25 years old, I a began fostering Annie and Sadie just after I had turned 23 but I have been a cat person my whole life.
How many cats do you have and how old are they?
I have two cats, Annie and Sadie. They are two years old as of last May.
Can you tell us a little bit about your kitties?
They’re sisters from the same litter and have been closely bonded since I brought them home. Annie is cuddley but shy at first. She’s very playful and loves to climb to high places. Sadie is very curious and fascinated by feet, she likes to sit close by you, which I think is part of her protective nature. When I first brought them home, Sadie always seemed like she was trying to defend Annie. Oh and she really likes to eat! They’re both very sweet.
How many of them did you adopt from the Forgotten Ones Cat Rescue?
They are both from Forgotten Ones Cat Rescue.
What got you to adopt from the Forgotten Ones
I only intended to foster at first but quickly became a foster failure when I met these two! I found Forgotten Ones online and was still living with my parents at the time so I was cautious about adopting when I was sure of where I would be moving and so on. But they became my family immediately and I knew I was going to make sure that they could go with me wherever.
What advice can you give to pet owners who are thinking about adopting a cat?
Do it, you’ll never regret the unconditional love and sweetness you get from your kitty. Get lots of different types of scratching posts and prepare for all the tiny toys to get lost within a week.
When you’re not around what kinds of things can your little one be found doing?
I used to catch them shredding toilet paper, climbing on top of the fridge or other high places they shouldn’t be. Now they mostly sleep, protect the apartment, and wait for mommy to come home.
Have there ever been any troubles having two cats and what do you do to keep them in check?
I have had some episodes where they have fought and were hissing at each other which was so unusually because they’re very close and constantly cuddling. I’m still not sure why that happened but I took them to the vet right away and it seemed to pass in a few days. The biggest issue is that I have trouble keeping feeding in check because Sadie generally likes more than her share, and Annie doesn’t eat much.
Have you always been a cat lover or a pet owner and if not, what got you to get these little ones?
I had never really had pets but I always knew I wanted one. After I graduated university and began putting together my own adult life, it just seemed necessary!
What is a piece of advice you wish you got when you adopted your cats?
Nothing really comes to mind! It was a very smooth process and Forgotten Ones was very helpful for a first time kitten owner, particularly with medical needs.
If you could adopt another animal what would it be and why?
Maybe another cat, because why wouldn’t someone want more cats?
What is the most important lesson you have learned as a pet owner?
That people think cats not loving, or even “low maintenance” but they are very wrong. If you think a pet is going to be low maintenance, you should definitely do a bit of considering before you adopt. My kitties definitely miss me even if I’ve only been gone for work between 8-10 hours… and I even have roommates to love them and give them affection! Cats definitely crave and need affection from their owners, I think its important to work in some play time to stimulate them just like you might make time to walk a dog.
What has the hardest thing been as a pet owner?
Hearing them cry, when I leave the apartment for work. When they had their spay surgeries they also unfortunately got an infection and had to have the surgeries redone. Watching them go through that was painful.
You will never know a love like this that is as consistent, selfless, and sweet.
Since we adopted our kitties from the same shelter I have to ask, what was your experience with them?
I had a great experience from Forgotten Ones. As I mentioned, I initially only intended to foster but quickly decided to adopt. Their was a lot of questions I had that ranged from “what food and grooming equipment should I get” to “where should I get medical advice”, and Forgotten Ones answered everything. They were very accessible and easy to get in touch with.
Would you recommend others adopt from the Forgotten Ones Cat Rescue?
