Today is one of the most exciting days for me since I get to feature one of my best friend’s pets!
Thank you for having me, I’m so excited to do this interview! Let’s see, I have a full house, and by house I mean an apartment lol. I’m married and we have an almost 3 year old, and our fur babies. Fun times and lots of memories made. Never a dull moment.
How many pets do you currently have?
We have two pets, a cat and a dog.
What are their names, ages and species?
Cheba is my 18 year old Dilute Calico cat and Dylan is our 5 year old dog. We believe he is a mix of Irish Wolf/Boarder Collie/Australian Sheppard. They are both rescues 😀
No, for about 12 years it was just my cat and I. About 5 years ago she got introduced to Dylan. Cheba was not impressed at all. All of a sudden there was a 8-10 week old puppy in the house. He was super curious about the cat and constantly tried to introduce himself. Cheba wanted no part of it. She would hiss, growl and swat at him. She never took out her claws tho. She knew he was a baby so she was giving warning shots. Dylan was so small and he needed us 24/7 so we felt it wasn’t right to bar one pet in the room. We had to sit on the floor in front of the desk (the cats favourite spot, in the open cubby) and hold Dylan back when he got to close to Cheba. She never ran at him or chased him away, just hissed and growled. It took a few months for the puppy to understand that the cat does not want to play. He would wine all the time because he just wanted to see who the cat in the cubby was. One day Cheba was laying in the bedroom and I said to myself, “this is my chance for the dog to meet the cat” I picked up Dylan, went to the bedroom, closed the door so Cheba couldn’t run and said “Dylan, meet Cheba” lol. I put down puppy, sat on the floor, cuddled my cat in my lap, held her and let Dylan sniff away. He was so happy and started bouncing around, his tail wagged like crazy! Cheba was meowing then all of a sudden she let me know how she truly felt…she ended up going number 1 and 2 in my lap. So that was the end of that hahahaha! It was for a good cause so I let it slide. I did that a few times and eventually my cat stopped going to the bathroom on me lol.
Yes, they get along great now. When they cross paths, they will have a stare down, Dylan’s tail starts going, Cheba freezes then runs for her life past him hahahaha. They had one or two quick battles but other than that Dylan knows Cheba won’t play. She will tease him by walking by him super close then taking off. Sometimes Dylan will try to block one of the two entrances to the kitchen so see if just maybe she will play, but she always gets around him lol. She has no problem coming to drink from his water bowl tho.
Why did you decide to become a pet parent?
I decided to be a pet parent when my friend came to school one day and she told me her and her mom found 3 kittens in a cardboard box. They were driving and saw this box and my friend got a gut feeling that something was inside the box. They stopped and found my cat and her 2 brothers in the rain. They took them home and right away tried to find them a forever home. Well, I told my mom all about the cats and how badly I need this cat. She finally gave in and I came home from work to meet my cat for the first time. I loved her the second I saw her. She was so tiny. The vet estimated she was 6 months old and the runt of the litter. I never saw her brothers but they did get good homes 🙂 my friend can’t believe I’ve had Cheba for 18 years 🙂
It’s hard to say. I love everything they do lol. If I had to choose I would say my favourite thing about them is their cuddles. Cheba likes to come out when everyone is sleeping and walk on me and rub her nose on my face and I absolutely must rub her whiskers and behind her ears. Sometimes when she rubs my nose she will give a nibble lol. I tell her I love her and she’s my old baby girl forever! Dylan loves belly rubs and when you get comfy on the couch he will come and put all 50lbs on your lap lol. He will also lay over our feet or lay beside us and squeeze his way in and bury his face between us and the couch. It’s so cute! It’s like they are thanking us every day for saving them from an awful place. Both came to us sick but we fixed that ASAP 🙂
If you’re not around, what are your pets doing?
Sleeping, 100% sleeping lol. Cheba’s favourite place now is under our dresser and Dylan loves the couch or by the back door. They both use their beds when they feel like it.
Cheba loved her Kong Wubba Mouse. She would cuddle and rub her nose all over it. Now she sleeps most of the time. Now and again go after a string. Dylan loves bouncy balls that squeak and stuffy toys. He can’t have those because he eats the stuffing. He really enjoys his rope toy and playing tug of war. He also loves to steal our daughters cookies.
What is the hardest thing about being a pet parent?
Being a pet parent can get overwhelming at times. The hardest thing with Dylan is getting him to eat. He’s super picky and will go 2 -3 days without eating a full meal. We give him high quality food and mix it with wet food or cook him food and he will still choose not to eat. I’m so glad my cat loves to eat lol. With her I worry about her weight and her kidneys. She is also eating high quality senior food, but she looses weight very quickly. She eats lots, has no bathroom issues and can still run and jump with some help from her pain supplement. I use Purica Recovery SA extra strength beyond pain relief. (Powder form) I LOVE THIS PRODUCT!! It’s done wonders for my cat in a matter of hours. Yes I said hours, not days lol.
What’s one piece of advice you wish you got before adopting little ones?
Make sure you have the time and money for any pet. It’s a living thing that needs constant love, affection and time to bond. It’s worth every dime and minute 🙂
Time, patience, discipline and correct. Lol. Baby animals are like babies. They have to learn life lessons and what’s ok and not ok. It’s so fun to see them trying to understand, their little head tilts and they bark or meow. Super cute!
There are lots of people who don’t like pets or don’t think they are beneficial in a household, what would you say to these people?
You need to leave now! Having a pet is a wonderful and joyous experience. You teach them things and they also teach us things. They teach us how to trust and love and just be a better person. The bond is so special! And if you rescue your pets, they show you so much love all the time! I had many people tell me when I was pregnant that I should get rid of my pets. “They will harm the baby and start behaving badly, blah, blah, blah!” Pets are part of the family and I would never give them up!!
If you could adopt another pet, what would you adopt?
Hmmm, I’m not sure lol. So many animals! Can I have a farm please? If I had to choose I would say probably another dog. Our daughter loves Dylan so much! She helps walk him and feed him, plays with him all the time. I wouldn’t want her to be without her “woof woof”. She calls Dylan woof woof lol. She is saying his name and all his nick names a lot more now 🙂
Is there anything you want to leave our readers off with?
If your going to be a pet parent, be a proper one. Don’t neglect your pet in any way or mistreat them. They need us and we need them. Don’t let one person’s bad experience hinder you from owning a pet. It’s all about how they are raised, doesn’t matter the pet or breed. Take care and go cuddle your fur babies 😀
I want to thank Michelle again for being part of this amazing project and if any of you are interested in an interview about your pets, please let me know through the submit page. We also have weekly pet showcases that feature our followers pets! You can get more information here!
